The Heritage Garden at Stellenbosch contains trees and other plants which have remarkable stories to tell. About 30 years ago the founder of this special garden, Dr Piet Marais, started planting trees and other plants with a link to historical, scientific, cultural and religious events of the past. This vision is still being pursued.
Today this story garden is a living monument and a gateway for people to meet with natural science, remember historical events and learn about interesting South African customs.
Situated on an ancient terrace of the Eerste River, the Heritage Garden offers a magnificent view of the high sandstone mountains, which surround Stellenbosch. Its atmosphere is one of tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle of a modern town.
Sandstone artifacts dating back to about 1.5 million years ago are commonly found in the surrounding hills and are exhibited.
An abundant bird life further complements the picturesque setting.
Scientific apparatuses such as a large Foucault pendulum, erected in the Garden, ensure that visitors will have both a recreational as well as a learning experience. |
